GROUP TRIP 2024

This year, six brave scientists embarked on an epic journey to a small, charming barn deep in the Vosges. We set off Wednesday around noon, fully prepared for adventure. And adventure we got—within an hour, we were wonderfully lost in the woods. To be fair, the autumn foliage was stunning, the views were spectacular... the only issue? It was a hiking trail. Not exactly car-friendly.

Eventually, we made it to our destination, the barn, and after unloading what felt like a lifetime’s worth of gear, we kicked off the first night with homemade pizza. After the carbs settled, we dove into a lively Science Session on making great graphics for publications, presentations, and posters. Because who doesn’t love a beautiful figure?

Thursday began with an Elevator Pitch session, where everyone put their hearts into perfecting their pitches. Let’s just say, if science fails, we’ve got a solid future in TED Talks! Then it was off to the great outdoors, where we hiked all the way to 1300 meters (okay, fine, we started at 1100 meters from the parking lot, but who's counting?). It started with a little drizzle, but as we climbed, the sun finally decided to make an appearance, rewarding us with stunning autumnal views. That evening, we shifted gears for Raclette and a murder mystery dinner — spoiler alert, Emily was the killer! (How could you, Emily?!) The night continued with games, laughter, and somehow it was 3 a.m. before we finally crashed for a very brief sleep.

Friday morning rolled around, and it was time to head home. But not before a pit stop in Colmar for some sightseeing, French delicacies, and a dose of culture at the Unterlinden Museum. By late afternoon, we were back in Freiburg, ready to collapse into a relaxing weekend.

All in all, we didn’t just survive the Vosges, we conquered them—one pizza, one pitch, and one murder mystery at a time.
